VGIF Provides Training to Mayan Midwives in Guatemala

In rural Guatemala, poor Mayan midwives lack the most basic equipment, training, an medicine other than traditional plant remedies. Village women refuse to go to a hospital not only because they lack money and transportation, but because hospitals lack personnel who speak their native Maya language, leaving women without means to communicate during what can be a terrifying experience.

VGIF provided quality birthing models and other medical equipment along with culturally sensitive training in Maya – all of which is helping to enrigh knowledge and safety around midwifery. The village is now enjoying its second year free from maternal deaths, and these women are proud to be able to offer something to the medical community, rather than always being on the receiving end.
